In basic accounting courses, there is usually mention of the saying that “accounting is the language of business.” This trite saying in effect says that accounting is the means whereby the owners can see if the business was profitable. But neither a government nor a nonprofit organization has owners. And earning a profit should not be the goal of any such organization. Why then is accounting and financial reporting still important for governments and nonprofit organizations? Can you even make an argument that it is more important for these types of entities? For instance, are there more stakeholders for a government and nonprofit organization?
GAAP
“Generally Accepted Accounting Principles” (“GAAP”) is a key idea in establishing comparability for the financial statements between similar entities. Can you please explained what is meant by the term “GAAP”? Who determines what is acceptable as GAAP? What do the acronyms AICPA, FASAB, and FASB, GASB each stand for? What is the role of each of these entities?
Final Course Project
Currently I am finishing a course, PA582, at the Keller Graduate School of Management. In this course I have been studying hoe to implement and evaluate public policies. My Course Project due at the end of this week will pertain to the current financial problems. I will take on the perspective of either Traditional or New Public Management. I am also trying to apply to transfer to the University of Illinois – Springfield to finish my masters degree.
Career Aspects
Class, please comment here on what you found by researching your currently chosen career field. What did you learn from the Occupational Outlook Handbook or the SCANS web site that is relevant to your chosen career? What other research, from associations or readings, or relevant organizations, have you found meaningful?
Role Models
Class, lets discuss any conclusions that you reached on your research writing about role models. What did you find taht was important to you, and what most surprised you about the individuals in your report on role models? What can you begin to transfer to your own perceptions of career tracks? Does this mean any “shift” in direction in your work at Keller?
